Vacuum Insulated Tubings

Majus

Majus Ltd was founded in 2005 by extensive experienced professionals of the oil and gas industry. In cooperation with ITP Interpipe, specialized in provision of highly insulated flowlines for offshore, MAJUS developed two different technologies based on highly insulated pipe-in-pipes.

The TOR technology heats an oil reservoir by conduction using a circulation of hot fluid through a continuous highly insulated coiled tubing. This technology requires very high performance insulation materials to avoid thermal losses between the heat source above ground and the downhole production zone. Heating the oil reduces its viscosity and consequently reduces the pressure loss in the formation. Therefore, increased productivity can be achieved for the same pressure drop if a sufficient temperature increment is maintained at the wellbore. This technology applies for horizontal wells with drain from 200 to 2500 m with heavy oil. With the TOR process, MAJUS offers a high efficient system to transfer energy from surface to the reservoir with less than 1% of heat loss.
The aim is to provide an efficient way of heating reservoirs by conduction in order to decrease heavy oil viscosity or clean the wax deposits.
This technology was tested in the Sultanate of Oman, where the oil production was multiplied by 3.
The I-tubing can be used either to carry the oil from the reservoir to the surface in order to keep the crude hot thus avoiding wax deposition or to carry steam like in SAGD projects from the surface downward and therefore improve the thermal stimulation processes. The use of highly insulated tubings could ease the production of oil and gas where the production needs thermal protection such as oil containing wax or prone to hydrate formation or wet gas or fields located in permafrost regions.
Based on the pipe-in-pipe technology applied with success for flowlines by ITP Interpipe, the I-Tubing consists in a multi-wall pipe arrangement, including an conventional tubing, acting as effluent containment, wrapped with high performance insulation material, inserted within a coaxial pipe acting as an external protection. The pressure in the annular between the pipes is reduced.
It offers the best thermal performance in comparison to its competitors, especially to the Vacuum Insulated tubings VIT in terms of insulated tubing for waxy oil recovery and steam injection: With the combination of the new insulation and proprietary field joint technologies, Majus propose a production tubing with a U-value of 0.5 W/m²/K which is 10 times more efficient than the existing technology on the market.
These performances can be achieved thanks to the insulation of the coupling location through an innovative design: the bayonet design. The bayonet joint was developed and patented by MAJUS. The concept is a male-female junction which avoids the heat leaks at the coupling location and any additional jointing sequence installing the tubings in the well. The system fits the majority of the conventional couplings.
